Because it inspires me to cook.
And he likes to eat.
I can't believe it, but it's already time for 2010 Harvest of the Day photos to begin. Here's yesterday's:
I chopped the green onions and the asparagus and the mint.
I took a trip to the grocery store, and I bought a pound and a half of cod, which I cut into chunks.
I put some brown rice penne on to cook. While it was cooking, I put 1 Tablespoon of butter and 1 Tablespoon of olive oil in my chef's pan. On low-medium heat, I sauteed the onions and the asparagus in the butter-oil mixture for a few minutes, 'til the asparagus was bright green and the mixture was fragrant. I whisked 1 Tablespoon of cornstarch into one cup of milk and poured it into the pan, adding a little bit of salt and freshly-ground pepper. I mixed it all gently but thoroughly and let it simmer (it started thickening almost immediately). I gently folded the fish chunks into the sauce. I added the chopped fresh mint, and simmered it for only a few more minutes (fish cooks quickly). When the pasta was done, I drained it, rinsed it, and combined it with the sauce.
I had a hothouse tomato which I sliced and added to the baby greens I had brought in from the garden. This made enough salad for two. I dressed the salad very simply, with red wine vinegar and olive oil, and a little bit of salt & pepper.
And it was gooooooood.
I think the fish/pasta dish would have benefited from the addition of some mushrooms, a splash of white wine in the sauce, and perhaps a little taste of cheese like Pecorino Romano. It was good without it, but I think it would have been GREAT with it.
