This was my special treat yesterday (wishing that photo were clearer). I love, love, love good chewy steel-cut old-fashioned oatmeal, cooked just so. I love most hot cereals, actually. For some reason it is extra-delicious when I have it in one of my Laura Ashley Chintzware bowls. It just is.
I can't eat it on a work day, because it does not stay with me. I get ravenous, hypoglycemically shaky, and brain-dead about an hour and a half after eating it. But I love it so. Yesterday I had it fully dressed with walnuts, cinnamon, raisins, and just a touch of maple syrup and milk. Mmmmmmmm. And then I ate a whole cow about an hour and a half later. I exaggerate. Only half a cow.

P.S. We have 13 donations to the Red Scarf Fund, totaling $390, since my post on Thursday. Let's keep up the super-fabulous great work!!!
Be sure to notify me by email (at norma[dot]knits[at]gmail[dot]com) of your donation to be placed in the drawing for the lovely red needles. (See my Thursday, September 24, post for further details.)-------------------------------
P.P.S. As of this writing (10 p.m. Saturday evening), there are already 32 members in our new Alert the Media! Ravelry group that I just started yesterday. That's just not riiiiiiiight. (Kidding! It's awesome! Keep it up, people! I really NEEEED another thing to do. Srsly, I do.)
But we still don't have a banner/button. Halp!

EDITED TO ADD: Thanks to Silvia and her Photoshop skillz, we have a banner and a badge, and I love them. Thank you, Sil!!!
Dude. I'm so sorry your oatmeal doesn't play nice. When I eat good old fashioned oatmeal it sticks with me!

Hey, Norma- it's a rotten rainy day, but all the vendors at the Southern Adirondack Fiber Festival- about 90 of them- are in barns at the Washington County Fairgrounds in Greenwich, NY. How far IS that from you? You can't garden anyway, so... Stop and see me if you decide to come.

Oatmeal stays with me until I can get around to making eggs. Love it, too.

Norma I am another who understands. Cereal is not filling for me. Even oatmeal doesn't stick and I am allergic to eggs.
I am so glad you have the donations etc. Well done.

Mmmm, oats with raisins and walnuts, my fave. Same here, it just will not get me through the morning which always confused me, 'they' always saying otherwise.

I know what you mean - I get hypoglycemic whiplash from it, too. Tasty stuff, but dangerous...
Love that blue bowl!

Mmm, oatmeal. If I add a piece of fruit and 2 scrambled egg whites on the side it keeps me sated for hours. It always tastes better in a fabulous bowl, love your Laura Ashley ware.

I had the exact same breakfast yesterday (except I didn't add cinnamon - I'll have to try that next time). I also use a fancy bowl, it makes it taste better, doesn't it? Thanks for posting every day. Some mornings yours is the only blog in my feed that has a new post.

Check your inbox, I noodled a badge/banner together with my morning coffee to see if I could still run the photoshop :) More coffee please, no oatmeal tho! Texture issues.

That's interesting. I eat a plain bowl of old-fashioned oatmeal before work every morning, and it definitely lasts me until lunch. True, sometimes I cook it with granola, so that adds some extra fruit and nuts to it, but still ... basic oatmeal is always a winner for me. And if I really feel like I need an extra boost, if I'm going to have a particularly busy morning? I'll beat an egg into it for some extra protein.
Hmm. Now I'm hungry again...

My daughter is a huge oatmeal fan - every morning. Lately her favorite is "ginger snap" oatmeal. I take plain instant (she's too impatient for steel cut) and sprinkle ginger, cinnamon, cloves and brown sugar on it.

That is some good looking oatmeal! I love walnuts and raisins in mine, too.

Yum, I know what you mean about oatmeal too but I love it so much for breakfast. I add about 2/3 cup of plain yogurt and slivered almonds and blueberries but no sweetener at all. The yogurt seems to give me enough protein to make the difference. When the blueberries are over (or get too expensive) I'll switch to dried apples and more nuts. Plus I bring my lunch to work most days so it is ready when I get hungry right at noon.

I add candied pecans and diced mango to mine, with a dash a ginger or allspice. Yum. But I have to eat it either before before bed, or on a day off. All that extra fiber can be disruptive to a workday.

Finally! Someone else who oatmeal doesn't stick to! I love it, but I'm always ravenous just a little while later (I'm the same way with sushi). They give it to me a lot when I'm working in the field, because most people love it and it makes them really full. The problem is that I feel full on a bowl of it, so I can't eat anything else to keep me full for the whole morning. Toast, eggs, and bacon however? Definitely full!

That oatmeal looked so good this morning that I immediately made some, yum. Then I got distracted, did some other stuff, then remembered, "Hey! I forgot to leave a comment! That's not the good habit I'm trying to cultivate at all!" I can report that steel cut oatmeal with dried cranberries, nutmeg and maple syrup is also a pretty good combination.

Which half? ;^)
Yeah, there's something about oatmeal that makes me hungry. I always figured it was my fault. Nice to know I'm not alone.
Great buttons from Sil!

"halp"--I love it! my still-nursing daughter is allergic to oats, the poor thing, so no oatmeal for her or me. I miss it so. I will live vicariously through that yummy pic.

Yum.
I don't know what they do differently at Johnny D's, but the oatmeal there is super amazing. I occasionally go there for breakfast (umm, it's an hour away by subway) just to have super amazing oatmeal for/with my breakfast.
My bell peppers are just starting to ripen. The pepper I was looking at just a few minutes ago has been on the plant for over a month easily. Slowest ripening pepper ever.

I wonder if your body isn't able to digest the oatmeal and that's why you're not getting the carbs. How are you cooking your oatmeal?
I soak my steal cut oats overnight in warm water and lime or lemon juice to make it easier to digest. Added bonus is that it cooks faster.

My favorite breakfast of all time. I make a huge batch with cinnamon, raisins, walnuts and a hint of maple syrup, then divide it into 4 portions, cool, seal them and refrigerate. Simply uncover and nuke in the morning, add a bit of milk and I'm good to go. Love it!

You ruined that lovely oatmeal and the beautiful maple syrup with those grape corpses.

That looks so tasty. I am looking forward to oatmeal weather.

I eat cooked rolled oats every AM. But I stir in a scoop of vanilla protein powder along with assorted fruit to keep me full.

I used to have that problem too, until I started adding about 1/2 tablespoon of butter (real butter) and whole milk. Kind of makes it not so low-cal anymore, but I can make it until lunch now.
