1. I went to watch the inauguration on campus yesterday. It was sooo worth watching, but I'll be honest -- I was watching it on a big screen with the captions on, and I was concentrating more on the captions -- and evaluating the skill of the CNN captioner -- than I was the actual ceremony. Whoever was doing those captions was DAMN GOOD. My hat goes off to her or him or them. I imagined myself writing the same thing, and I don't think I could have done such a fabulous job.
2. The news is good with regard to the arms, elbows and hands. I hope I'm not speaking too soon, and I've got a few busy days to go before I am out of the woods, but I'm feeling super-optimistic about it all. Could I be ready to knit again in February? I think I could!
3. If you are going to enter into a Lexulous or Scrabble game with Naomi, be afraid. Be very afraid.
4. Dick Cheney looked like Dr. Evil yesterday, didn't he? David thinks I'm being mean for saying so.
5. I think I've fallen out of love with Grey's Anatomy. I haven't watched it the last two weeks and have no interest in bothering to watch it online. I think I'm sick of Meredith and Cristina or whatever (ha). I wonder how LOST is going to be tomorrow night.
6. I've run out of random.
I almost cried during the inauguration and I'm not known for being easily moved to tears.
On another note, when does Dick Cheney NOT look like Dr. Evil? Then again, I suppose he might say the same bout me since in his eyes I'm the enemy.

Funny thing: Whilst I Was watching the ceremony, I thought of you doing the captioning, and then blogging about it and telling us it was you !

LOST! I cannot wait!
Dick Cheney~shudder!!!

My first reaction when I saw Cheney yesterday ... "You, Mr. Potter, are nothing but a scurvy old spider."
Other than that, what I saw was wonderful (I had a school meeting scheduled at NOON. The chair of the meeting later admitted that when she picked the time and day she had forgotten what else would be going on that day). I'll catch up on the rest on YouTube.

I was watching with my coworkers at my uni's Institute on Disabilities, and all we could pick up on the rabbit ears was Fux. Captioning was *hideous*. (I'm sure their captioner was trying his/her best, but it was unintelligible.) I wish we'd been able to tune in to CNN, or get the descriptive video service feed -- needed the DVS more, for a low-vision colleague, but we did our best.
I shall not say what I was thinking as Cheney approached the stairs in his wheelchair...

My niece captions for TV - I'll have to ask if she did anything inauguration-related!
Poor Dick. It's too bad I don't have the photo of him from our local paper taken when he visited a few years ago. He was eating a frozen custard, but unfortunately for him, all anyone noticed was another area of his anatomy, which was prominently outlined through summer slacks. Sorry for being indelicate, but it was a tremendous local joke for quite some time. And the metaphor was just too good.

Every time I see Dick Cheney I hear the Darth Vader theme in my head. Good riddance to him!

I was so impressed by the New President and First Lady. Michelle has wonderful style and his smile is so winning. Time to focus on the positive.

Dick Cheney in a wheelchair. It was symbolic don't you think? The old evil regime crippled and laid low as the new administration full of optimism and hope comes in the front door. Yesterday was really the start of the new year for me.

I'm glad you're on the mend, and hopeful that you'll be knitting again soon. As to Cheney, I couldn't help but think of Dr. Strangelove. Good riddance to that hateful regime.

YAY for your arm, elbows, and wrists.
I was moved beyond words yesterday.
Dick. He has always been Dr. Evil. Dr. Evil Ratbastard. I think charges should be made against both of 'them' and all their cohorts.
As for our new Mr. President and First Lady, Welcome!

Soooo sick of Meredith. McSteamy is still smoking hot though. And - yes...LOST!

Yay for the wrists & elbows. I have never watched Grey's Anatomy so I can't comment on that, but I
have found that many of the shows I used to watch just stopped being interesting for me. I'll stick to NCIS. About Dick Cheney - my mom called me yesterday convinced that he was in a wheelchair because he had finally been struck by a divine lightning strike - and I cant say she's wrong. The inauguration was wonderful, but the moment I couldn't pull my eyes away from was when W got on his helicopter and really left. Really left. I hope everyone in DC and all of us in the US in general can now take a deep breath of clean air. A friend of mine in Europe called yesterday to congratulate us on surviving the past 8 years. It really does feel like an achievement.
On to the work of the day. Have a good one,
Emily

Tyne Daly as McDreamy's (though I'm kind of "meh" on that one) mom is nice... I've always loved her -- and she's a knitter, too, ya know. What's not to love? I just ran across an old knitting mag from '02 (I think) that had an article about her knitting between takes on the set of Judging Amy.

Haha, John Stewart gave Dick Cheney's wheelchair video a white dr. evil cat and played the Darth Vader theme on his live show last night...

This Canuck listened to the inauguration on CBC, and was moved to moist-eyedness too. What an exciting event. What a LOT of pressure for the man - but I have confidence that he and his entourage are up for it.
and, as a completely frivolous aside - I'm beyond excited about LOST. (but may not get to see it tonight...sigh)

I just don't get the whole Denny and Izzy thing. He's dead, for Pete's sake! It's just too weird for them to have a sex scene. But, I do think the new guy Christina is with is hot.
Posted by: Lori | Wednesday, January 21, 2009 at 09:29 AM
NBC commented yesterday about Cheney's similarity to Dr. Strangelove. I thought that was awesome.
Posted by: Kelly | Wednesday, January 21, 2009 at 09:58 AM
I'm not that scary! (Is this why you haven't played again yet?)
Methinks you won't want to play my downstairs neighbor, who's clobbered me a few times...
Posted by: naomi | Wednesday, January 21, 2009 at 10:05 AM
Okay, maybe it's just the January blahs talking but TV in general has been crap and Grey's, hello? Step up to the plate, writers! Maybe that's why I've had my nose buried deeply in books for the last several weeks.
Posted by: Elizabeth | Wednesday, January 21, 2009 at 10:40 AM
I'm with Ruth: Cheney made me think of Ol' Man Potter. But I'll have to track down the Jon Stewart video.
Posted by: Gina W | Wednesday, January 21, 2009 at 10:41 AM
I thought Cheney WAS Dr. Evil.

Dick Cheney in a wheelchair, going for the sympathy vote, looked to my overstimulated former Catholic mind like the devil in a wheelbarrow. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

I loved it when NBC (Tom Brokaw?) made the Dr. Strangelove analogy. My favorite part of the whole inauguration, aside from Bush out/Obama in, was how much fun Yo-Yo Ma was having. That quartet was awesome. A woman, a black man, an Asian, and a Jew -- nary a WASPish white man among them.

I have been avoiding the Lexulous, because I would become horribly addicted. I used to play What's in a Name ages ago as my online word game (and have played many versions of Bookworm or other word search games and Boggle!). I'm out of practice right now, but it wouldn't take too long to get back into the thick of things.

Go back before Dr. Evil, way back and there was Dr. Strangelove with Peter Sellers. That's who I saw, and Brian Williams even made that comment, though I'm way older than he is so he must have seen it on TV, not in the movies.
Other than that horrifying sight, great day. Really great.

Dick Cheney was definitely channeling Dr. Evil. all he needed was a white cat.

Grey's Anatomy? The cure has arrived: Tyne Daly! Oh, she is my hero, for sure. My girlfriend made me watch last week's and yes, indeedy, she is the cure for what ails them at GA.
Take care of those arms and hands, girlfriend! I worked for 35 years as an ASL/English interpreter and I know how precious these appendages are. Don't fool around with it.

I am so glad you're feeling better. That Cindy deserves socks or jam or something equally fabulous.
That's why I stopped watching Grey's and Lost. I have a hard enough time keeping track of family drama. I cannot keep track of all those tv weirdos, too.
I saw a photo of Cheney from yesterday in the wheelchair all hunched over, looking cranky and pissed at the world. Made my tiny black heart smile.

Re: Cheney - I completely agree with you and I want to know what was in those so important heavy boxes he found necessary to move by himself, assuming he probably remembers better than us the condition of his pump!
I really think this should be investigated!
Posted by: Rachel | Wednesday, January 21, 2009 at 05:18 PM
Cheney: Dr. Strangelove. Definitely.
Posted by: Pamela | Wednesday, January 21, 2009 at 06:44 PM
Maybe it's just me, but aren't we insulting Dr. Evil by comparing him to Cheney??? ;o)
Posted by: Leslie | Wednesday, January 21, 2009 at 08:34 PM
I am sniggering at you rating the captioning! Glad you found it up to your standards.
Would a hugely important event like that have multiple captioners, I'm thinking? Like: "You've got the President, I've got Roberts, GO!"
I'm glad to hear optimism regarding your upper extremities. Keep up the good work, and the good behavior.

Re: #4 - what was in those boxes Cheney had to shift by himself out of his office? We can just imagine. I had mental images of pushing his wheelchair over the edge of the staging. I as glad that Obama gave him a few digs in the inaugural speech and a hard kick in the nuts during his speech on the 21st.
Re: #5 - we switch over to "Thirty Rock" halfway through "Grey's" now, and don't even bother to find out what happened in the second half. The Denny theme has just gotten too weird, doncha think?

I think everyone thought Dick Cheney looked like an evil villain of some sort. I almost wonder if he is faking for one last power trip.

I heard Vitac was handling the majority of inauguration duties this year (although how they can do it for every channel in the word in unexplained). Our captions were pretty good when we were reading them....
