I truly apologize to all of the bloghood, I really do. I've been going around to various knitblogs leaving really silly comments, and having much more fun doing it than should be legal. But I gotta laugh. a) anyone who works in the legal profession just has to sometimes, and b) the events of our lives lately have been kinda stressful.
Just an aside here -- golly, I don't even remember the comedian so I can't give him credit, but how many of you ever saw the comedian who did a spoof on Mr. Rogers as if he were on drugs? "It's a beautiful day in the neighborhood......a beautiful day for a neighbor....would you be mine?" (see how my mind works? I coulda given Faulkner a run for his money, I'll tell you that -- well, that's my delusion anyway) ................ zzzzzzzzzz, wha? Oh, what was I saying? Oh, yes......
Our household has been sleep-deprived in a very big way for the last -- oh, I don't know -- 72 hours maybe. This is like having a newborn, I remember. (fondly. oh yes.)
You see, my dear spouse is the Chief Law Enforcement Officer (aka D.A., or we call it State's Attorney here in VT) in the tiny adjoining county to ours. The county is so small that it only has a part-time S.A. But the description "part-time" only applies part of the time. It's really an oxymoron, "part-time State's Attorney." Coz when the shit hits the fan.....
In the tiny little sleepy county where the biggest offense is usually a speeding garden cart -- and it happens to be my birthplace, as well -- all hell has broke loose.
Over the weekend, a bizarre true Act of God happened at a wedding. A wild and wooly storm blew up off the lake and tore up the large wedding tent from its stakes, killing the 70-some-odd-year-old grandmother of either the bride or the groom. (can't remember which) In addition, several people were sent to the hospital with injuries. There was no crime involved in this, but it is just evidence of the evil curse that seems to have befallen this tiny (and I do mean TINY) island community.
That very evening, a double homicide occurred. Completely unrelated, although this community is so small that it is likely that everybody involved IS somehow related. But it was a horrible thing, and in a community where people don't lock their doors. A house was found on fire, and it turns out (we only learned this from the newspaper account) it was my own uncle who was going out fishing early in the morning who discovered the house on fire and tried to get in, but it was too far gone. Two people perished, and at first it appeared that the fire was accidental. Until the autopsy. The autopsy revealed multiple stab wounds in each victim.
Anyway, I can't get into too many more details here, but two people were arraigned today for the crimes. Life is going to be different around here. Hopefully we'll get some sleep again now. But wow. What a thing. And my poor spouse is going to be very UN-part-time busy.
